Dear Everybody,

Sorry I haven't written but I've been a little under the weather.

I decided, even before I came to this fair land, that if I wanted to go home again I'd have to be very careful. So I'm always careful not to sleep on guard, always watch out for booby traps, and always keep spread out. I even told a lieutenant once that he was following too close.

I figure by being the most careful and cautious I'll have the best chances. So what happens? I'm laying on my bunk in Dong Tam and somebody downstairs goes crazy and starts shooting through the roof, my floor. Now hold on! Pick up Mother and forget about the Red Cross.

The wound was in the belly. I lost a few inches of intestine but there's nothing to worry about. The biggest problem I've got now is discomfort. Have you ever eaten a steady diet of cheap jello and bouillon cube "soup". Since the bullet messed up the plumbing pretty badly, I've got me a colostomy bag which I'll lose in about 6 weeks.

One advantage of being hit is that, with my wound, I won't have to return to the field. Way I look at it, a few months in the hospital beats 12 in the field. Besides the nurse says I look cute with my crew cut, my moustache and all my bandages.

That's all there is to say for now so I'll say goodbye

Love Robert
