Letter from Mac, Sept 8-10-11, 1968

Sunday
Dear Bob,

I received your letter last night. This Ft. Carson sounds bad. Tell me more about it. What kind of field exercises do they have? Do the returnees of Vietnam become squad leaders or other types of leaders? Do they have to put up with a lot of bullshit? That KP and guard duty sounds awful chickenshit. I never expected to be doing anything like that when I get out of here.

Sorry,
I cant' remember why I had to stop writing. I think it was time to eat or something like that.

Our last three operations have been easy. The first of three was a blocking force for some ARVN that were sweeping. We also had ARVNs attached to us. When the sweeping force came within a few meters of our blocking force, the ARVNs with us opened up on the other ARVN unit. By the time we got them to stop firing the other ARVN unit was firing back at us with 79s and carbines. Well with a lot of yelling back and forth the firing stopped and we called for the other ARVNs to come on through. They came through alright with rifles pointed at us, a LAW opened and ready to fire, and a real case of the ass. They started a fight with some of the attached ARVNs that were with us. Almost shot them. It turned out the ARVNs with us wounded two of their men, one almost died. In case of you misunderstanding this, the ARVNs with us didn't know they were firing at other ARVNs. They thought they were VC (ironic, huh.)

Second mission was ambush in Eastern A.O. right outside the birm.

Third mission was another blocking force. No contact this time.

Well we've got a night off tonight and a few of us guys are going over to the EM club and have a few beers.

So I'll say so long for now. Hope you can get that discharge. Good luck.

Your good friend.
Danny
